The SCOA GLOBE WALK CHALLENGE
Was created in response to community consultations conducted by the Saskatoon Council on Aging for the Age-friendly Saskatoon Initiative. Older adults identified the need for more physical activity and social opportunities during the winter months. SCOA took action and created the Globe Walk Challenge to meet those needs.

The Saskatoon Council on Aging
is a community leader in the health and independence of older adults.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT GLOBE WALK

HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN BE ON A TEAM?
A team can be made up of any number of people. We have teams of two people and teams of two hundred people. If you don’t belong to a team, you can still participate by joining the SCOA team. Call the Globe Walk Coordinator at (306) 652-0027 to register.

DO TEAMS HAVE TO BE IN SASKATOON?
We welcome teams from Saskatoon and the surrounding rural areas. “Snowbirds” can join a team and e-mail in their STATS to their Captains.

DO TEAM MEMBERS HAVE TO WALK OR EXERCISE TOGETHER?
No. Exercising together is optional. Some teams choose to exercise as a team and others complete their physical activities by themselves or in smaller groups. Each team member provides their Team Captain with their total steps, distance traveled (in miles or km), or time spent in physical activity each month. This data will count toward the your team totals. All forms of physical activity are eligible as counted miles.

HOW DO I DETERMINE TOTAL KILOMETRES FOR THE GLOBE WALK?
1300 steps equal 1 kilometre and 1/2 hour of exercise equals 2 kilometres, which is the common accepted standard. You’ll submit your steps, distance or time to your Captain and he/she will do the calculation for you.

HOW DO I KEEP TRACK OF MY PROGRESS?
Your Captain will provide you with a monthly calendar to track your progress. Calendars are also available under the “Download” section on this website and can be printed. Many Globe Walkers use fit bits, pedometers, cell phone apps or similar devices to keep track of their miles/distance. At the end of each month you will submit your progress to your Captain, who will, in turn, submit the team total to the SCOA Globe Walk Coordinator.

IS THERE A CHARGE TO PARTICIPATE?
No! The SCOA Globe Walk program is FREE!
