The Saskatoon Council on Aging is a community leader in the health and independence of older adults. During community consultations for the Age-friendly Saskatoon Initiative, older adults identified the need for more physical activity and social opportunities during the winter months.
The SCOA Globe Walk Challenge is a response to that need.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN BE ON A TEAM?
A team may be comprised of any number of people.
DO TEAMS HAVE TO BE IN SASKATOON?
Teams can be from Saskatoon or the surrounding Health Region district. If there are “snowbirds” they can join a team and e-mail in their STATS to their Captains.
DO TEAM MEMBERS HAVE TO WALK OR EXERCISE TOGETHER?
No – each team member will provide their Team Captain with their total steps, or distance travelled (in miles or km) or the amount of time spent in physical activity each month. This data will count toward the team totals.
FORMULA TO DETERMINE MILES FOR THE GLOBE WALK?
The formula is accepted standard used in other walks. 2,000 steps equals approximately one mile and for older adults it takes an average of 30 minutes. You’ll submit to the Captain your steps, distance or time; they will do the calculation for you.
HOW DO I KEEP TRACK OF MY PROGRESS?
Keep track of your progress using a monthly calendar provided by your Captain. Calendars are also available under the Download section of this website and can be printed. At the end of each month you will submit your progress to your Captain.
