Nicknamed “The Big Train”, Lionel Conacher might be the least known athlete on a list of Canada’s top 15, despite having a national award named after him.
Conacher succeeded in a number of sports including football, hockey, baseball, lacrosse, boxing and wrestling. He won a Grey Cup, a Memorial Cup, two Stanley Cups and even a baseball championship in the International League.
He was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame, the Hockey Hall of Fame and the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame.
And if that wasn’t enough – he became and MPP for Ontario and then won a seat in the House of Commons.
The Canadian Press awards the Lionel Conacher Award to the country’s male athlete of the year.
