Today’s Inspiration – “The spirit that epitomises the Second World War generation” – Bernard Jordon
Bernard Jordan, a WWII Royal Navy veteran, who wanted to “honour his mates” at D-Day commemorations in France. The only problem – he was in a care home in England. So he put on his medals (under his overcoat) and told staff that he was going for a walk. Instead he took a train to the coast and then a cross-channel ferry to France. Police were searching for the 89 year old when a younger veteran called them to say that he had met Bernard on the crossing to France, and assured them that his “new mates” would take care of him. Bernard became an instant hero (he was returned to England on a Royal Navy ship) and within days received thousands of cards and greetings from well wishers around the country.
